The Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: Events

Monday, 11 July 2022, 18:00

Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften
Lecture | Series »Europe after the Russian invasion of Ukraine«

Nathalie Tocci (Istituto Affari Internazionali, Rome)
»Europe from an age of idealism to an age of war«

The lecture
After decades of progressive integration and expansion, from the single market and monetary union to the successive enlargements to southern, northern and eastern Europe, the European project tipped into a prolonged existential crisis. From the rejection of the Constitutional Treaty, to the sovereign debt crisis, the migration crisis, and Brexit, the European Union teetered on the brink for too long. As it did, Europe lost its narrative: it no longer had a compelling story to tell. First with the pandemic and then with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU found it’s raison d’être once again. Having left the age of idealism and the ensuing age of pragmatism, the EU is learning to navigate the age of war.

The speaker
Nathalie Tocci is Director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali, Honorary Professor at the University of Tübingen and Pierre Keller Visiting Professor at the Harvard Kennedy School. She has been Special Advisor to EU High Representative and Vice President of the Commission Josep Borrell. As Special Advisor to HRVP Federica Mogherini she wrote the European Global Strategy and worked on its implementation. She has been a member of Eni's Board of Directors since May 2020.

The lecture series
During the coming semesters, the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften will host an interdisciplinary discussion forum devoted to the question of which new role the European Union can and must develop in order to ensure freedom and stability in Europe and in the world. In the forum, experts will discuss the current and future developments of the European Union in the regional and global environment. The discussion forum will be chaired by Matthias Lutz-Bachmann, director of the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften, and by Gunther Hellmann and Stefan Kadelbach.

Participation
The seats are limited. Please register before 7. July 2022:
